## Description
It seems to be natural that there are many sailors who want to compete against each other even if they sail different boat models. The reason is often simply that they can't find enough other sailors having exactly the same boat as so many different boat models does exist (think of a club where sailors want to have a club regatta each week or owners of real big expensive boats which are unique). The main difficulty is to create rules which makes the boats somehow comparable but keep the effort low to ensure the right application of these rules. Over time several rule systems have been created which are managed by internationally accepted organizations (ORC, IRC).
All these rule systems calculate a 'handicap' for each boat which is applied to boat during the racing.
All these rule systems calculate a 'handicap' for each boat which will be applied during the racing. As a result it's hard to understand who is leading a race as the position of the boat (relative to the other boats) is not the leading indicator anymore. If we could apply the 'handicap' live to boats we could show the real ranking/leaderboard during a race and use the same techniques for the moderation and publication of handicap races as we do it for the One-Design classes.
As there are many different kind of handicap races we should try to categorize them and look for the categories fitting best to our goals.
#### 1. Club level races
These are rather small weekly or monthly races on club level.
#### 2. International championships
ORC/IRC championships
#### 3. Long distance races
Fastnet
#### 4. Big boat races
Rolex Maxi Cup
Looking at the typical audience and the owner of the boats we assume that the "big boat races" are an interesting new target group for our solutions. Another good fit are the ORC/IRC championships as the overall setup is similar to the One-Design classes championships (short races close to the land).

- Access to on board electronics
- Live results for everyone including the racing boats?
- Long distance races
## Synergies
There are synergies with the Smartphone Tracking project as well as the Sailing Analytics in general.

Another risk is the that we don't know how big the investment must be to reach a point where we can really change the way handicap regattas are presented.
