fixed severe locking issue: unlockAfterRead was not placed in finally clause, causing locks to be held infinitely after an exception;
...
also fixed the NPE that could occur when trying to generate the polar for a race with no upwind start

fix NPE that can occur if the recurring "progress hops" lead to the termination of a tracked before the clientParamsPHP poller variable is initialized;
...
the stop method access the poller and tries to cancel it; note that this is an interesting case of a final variable
"changing" its value after having "escaped" from the constructor to another thread
